Annual Donor Reception and
Pardee Foundation awards Philanthropist of the Year

Pardee Hospital Foundation named L. Howard Carl, Jr., as its 2008 Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year at the Annual Donor Event held at Champion Hills Country Club last night. The award was presented by Grace Vineyard, the 2007 award recipient.
The Healthcare Philanthropist of the Year award is given annually to a member of the community that has made an outstanding contribution to Pardee Hospital and the Pardee Hospital Foundation. The recipient acts as an advocate for philanthropy and perpetuates giving within the community. L. Howard Carl, Jr. is an exemplary philanthropist for both the hospital and the Foundation, according to Myra Grant, vice president of community accountability and philanthropy for Pardee Hospital.
Carl’s volunteer hours to Pardee have been enhanced by annual giving as well as advocacy for planned gifts. He has also served as chair of the Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee.
“Pardee Foundation established the Healthcare Philanthropy Award to annually honor an individual who had provided long-term gifts and volunteer time to Pardee Hospital as well as other health care organizations in our community. As a board member of both the hospital and Foundation’s Board of Directors, L. Howard Carl, Jr., has been a loyal donor and advocate for bequests and endowments to Pardee. He has provided expertise in our Planned Giving Program, and as a retired trust officer brings a wealth of expertise to our Foundation work. We were certainly pleased to honor him in this way,” said Grant.
Pardee Hospital Foundation’s Annual Donor Event is held as a way of thanking the member donors of the Generations of Excellence Society. Members of this society donate $1,000 or more to the Pardee Hospital Foundation every year. The co-chairs of this year’s event were Linda Sokalski, Ph.D., and Jane Swafford. They were assisted by fellow volunteer committee members Marcia Caserio, Ricki Cox, Noel Davis, Deanna Ellis, Bob Eklund, Doris Eklund, Kim Gold, Colin Thomas and Grace Vineyard.

Kenmure Country Club was the setting for the 13th Annual Pardee Foundation Tournament of Champions on May 19. The weather for the event was sunny with a light breeze-perfect for the 140 golfers who participated this year. Kris Hoce, CEO of Pardee Hospital, and Chris Burns, Co-Chair of the Tournament, welcomed everyone to the event.
At the Award and Sponsorship Ceremony, Chris Burns announced the winners and thanked the 2008 Golf Tournament Committee, Foundation staff and Tournament volunteers for their role in making the event successful.
Proceeds from this year’s tournament totaled $82,637 and will be used to purchase life-saving equipment for the Emergency Department.
“Cardiac arrest can happen without warning. The best care for the patient in this setting is quick response by emergency personnel. The defibrillator equipment being provided by Pardee Foundation is one of the items most widely used in life-saving episodes,” states Dr. Robert C. Boleman, Chief of Staff and Medical Director, Emergency Department.
Time matters when a patient has a cardiac episode, and that’s why these state-of-the-art defibrillators are needed. The goal is to stabilize the patient quickly to save precious heart muscle. Pardee’s Emergency Department has been recognized throughout the WNC and the State for timely stabilization of heart attacks as part of the RACE Initiative. Pardee’s average time is 91 minutes.
At the end of the day, there was much to celebrate-the picture-perfect day, the extraordinary course, the participation of 140 golfers, the first women’s division, the 35+ volunteers, and the knowledge that $82,637 had been raised for life-saving equipment.

Local Artist Donates Painting

Mary Brummett attended her first Women Helping Women event in 2007 with her sister. In the early 1980’s, Mary’s mother learned that she had breast cancer. Her mother took the news about the diagnosis and the need for surgery very calmly. She had a mastectomy and continued to care for Mary’s father, who had Parkinson’s disease. Her positive attitude and inner strength helped her to recover. Several years later, Mary’s sister also received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Like their mother, her sister took the news calmly. Her sister, a microbiologist at Pfizer, studied the latest literature about the diagnosis and treatment. Two women. Two different journeys.
“Anticipating April” is a landscape transitioning from winter bareness to the profusion of color and light of spring. A river runs through the painting, symbolizing the journey of each patient. The river winds around, making one curious about what’s around the bend. There’s a hint of spring in the green grass and feeling of serenity and comfort. When asked what feeling Mary wanted to evoke from the painting, she said, “Hope. Spring is hope; April is smiles, tears, rain and sun.” It sounds a lot like the journey breast cancer patients take.
Mary’s painting will inspire hope in many patients for many years to come. Thank you, Mary, for the painting, your gift of hope.
11th Annual Women Helping Women
Pardee Hospital Foundation's Women Helping Women committee began in 1998. The goal of the committee is to provide financial assistance to uninsured and underinsured women patients at Pardee Hospital who need screening mammograms and breast cancer care. An educational luncheon event is held each year to provide an ongoing resource for patient care.
This year the Foundation is celebrating our 11th annual luncheon which will be on October 17th. We will also be having a dinner on October 16th. Both events will take place at Hendersonville Country Club.
